VAT & Sales Tax Calculator
Add VAT or sales tax to a net price, or strip it out of a gross price, at any rate. See the net, tax and gross amounts clearly — ideal for freelance invoices.
Add or remove tax in one click
Whether you need to add VAT to a quote or pull the tax out of a gross figure a client gave you, this VAT and sales tax calculator handles both directions. Pick 'Add tax' to grow a net price into a gross one, or 'Remove tax' to find the net hiding inside a tax-inclusive total.
The maths behind it
Adding tax is simple multiplication: net times the rate gives the tax, added back for the gross. Removing tax is where people slip up — you cannot just subtract the percentage. To strip 20% VAT from a gross price you divide by 1.20, not multiply by 0.80. The calculator applies the correct formula automatically so your invoices stay accurate.
Why it matters for invoices
Charging or reclaiming the wrong tax amount causes awkward corrections and, at worst, compliance problems. Freelancers registered for VAT must show net, tax and gross clearly. Even if you are not registered, understanding the tax inside a client's stated budget helps you quote the right net fee. Pair it with our Invoice Generator for clean, professional bills.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the gross price by one plus the rate as a decimal. For 20% VAT, divide by 1.20. The calculator does this for you in 'Remove tax' mode.
What is the difference between VAT and sales tax?
Both are consumption taxes. VAT is collected at each stage of the supply chain, while sales tax is usually added once at the final sale, but the add/remove maths here works for either.
Can I use a custom tax rate?
Yes. Tap 'Custom' and type any rate, useful for regions with unusual percentages.
Does this tool store anything?
No. It runs entirely in your browser with nothing saved or transmitted.
